Susan advises and defends companies through complex and high stakes litigation and regulatory matters involving issues of federal income tax controversy and commercial litigation. 

Civil Litigation and Tax Controversy. For almost 20 years, Susan has skillfully represented companies in high stakes and complex cases in federal district courts, state courts, appellate courts, administrative tribunals, and US tax court, as well as mediation and arbitration. Susan provides her clients with practical insights, sound judgment, and trial capacity when needed.  

Susan represents large companies in federal income tax audits, appeals, and litigation in the U.S. Tax Court. Susan has experience negotiating favorable resolutions of audits and appeals. Susan’s litigation experience gives her clients an edge on federal income tax controversies.

Susan has litigated cases involving disputes over environmental issues, insurance coverage, employment, breach of contract, corporate governance, and personal injury in state and federal courts.  

Workplace Safety. As a member of the firm’s Workplace Safety and Emergency Response team, Susan has defended clients in regulatory enforcement actions, including matters before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. She has also led multiple investigations and defended clients in civil litigation following severe industrial incidents.  

Before joining Holland & Hart, Susan served as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit for the Honorable Kenneth Ripple. Susan is licensed to practice in Wyoming state and federal courts, and the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Fourth, Seventh, and Tenth Circuits, and the U.S. Tax Court.

  • Represent large public company in audit and appeals before the Internal Revenue Service and litigation in the U.S. Tax Court. 

  • Obtained favorable ruling in federal district court vacating an agency citation on grounds of federal preemption.  

  • Successfully protected a client’s trade secrets against former employee through litigation. 

  • Won favorable trial verdict for real estate company against professional negligence claims. 

  • Won summary judgment on behalf of company against personal injury claims.
