Craig Galli uses his skills as a former Senior Trial Attorney with the Environment and Natural Resources Division, U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., to defend corporate clients in high profile litigation matters and to advise them on resolving complex civil and criminal environmental compliance matters.

He has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University.

Environmental Litigation Craig has defended companies in the mining, energy, government contractors, land development, and manufacturing industry sectors in a variety of environmental enforcement actions, citizen suits, and cost recovery actions.

Complex Environmental Compliance and Permitting Matters Craig routinely advises corporate clients on enhancing compliance programs, and developing compliance procedures and training programs. He also represents clients on environmental permitting matters and conducting environmental due diligence for projects where litigation risks are high. He also leads the firm’s compliance services practice team.

  • Represented renewable energy company in Ninth Circuit and two parallel cases in federal district court in California brought under NEPA and NHPA by Indian tribes and environmental groups challenging a proposed energy project
Civil and Criminal Enforcement
  • Represented major oil company in connection with large oil spills and the resulting enforcement actions and private property owner lawsuits that followed
  • Represented large energy company in Utah in regulatory and criminal enforcement actions
  • Represented real estate developers in civil and criminal enforcement actions under federal wetlands protection laws
  • Represented large energy company in federal district court in Colorado brought by environmental groups challenging oil shale regulations

Hazardous Waste, Toxic Substances, and Contaminated Properties
  • Represented Nevada manufacturing company in defense of RCRA and TSCA enforcement action by EPA
  • Represented radioactive waste disposal company in multiple administrative challenges to permits and licenses and in judicial appeals to Utah Court of Appeals and Utah Supreme Court
  • Represented large oil company in toxic tort case in Colorado involving asbestos contamination
  • Represented government contractor defending RCRA citizen suit, NEPA challenge and toxic tort action resulting in seven favorable decisions in federal district courts in Utah and District of Columbia, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and Utah Court of Appeals

Regulatory Compliance and Permitting
  • Developed Lacey Act compliance program for large importer and manufacturer of essential oils and other plant products.

  • Developed environmental auditing program for large oil and gas producer.

  • Developed environmental spill response and reporting procedures for oil refinery.

  • Developed waste stream compliance program for food supplement manufacturer.

  • Served as counsel to project development teams to manage permitting and compliance matters for major pipeline, transportation, mining, and energy projects in Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado, and Wyoming.

  • Served as primary outside legal counsel to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games for all environmental compliance and permitting matters.
