Salt Lake City Office Pulls Off Another Great United Way Day of Caring Project

Attorneys and staff from the Holland & Hart Salt Lake City office put their volunteer spirit to work recently at Granite Park Junior High school where they weeded the community garden, laid weed barrier, shoveled mulch for spring planting next year and planted trees.

This United Way Day of Caring project was organized by the Salt Lake City committee of the Holland & Hart Foundation, the firm’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation dedicated to promoting the human side of community service by creating ways for the firm’s extended "family" to help others in need. In addition to lawyers offering their professional services on a pro bono basis, firm members also do non-legal charitable and civic work.

Committee Chair Barbara Thurgood, who organizes the annual event, said the office has participated in the United Way Day of Caring for more than ten years. The Day of Caring is Salt Lake City's largest volunteer event with more than 5,700 volunteers completing 130 projects ranging from reading in classrooms to painting and landscaping.

Other United Way projects the office has been involved in include:
• Tree Utah (2008-2010) where they cleaned and weeded the community gardens and built an arbor for vine plants.
• YMCA Community Center (2011) where they picked up litter, removed and replaced soil, and planted trees and bushes.
• Kearns Junior High (2012) where they cleaned the courtyard and outside areas, replaced shelf paper in the HomeEc room, broke down boxes, and removed trash.
• Oquirrh Hills Elementary (2013) where they cleaned and weeded flower beds, supplied dirt and plants for planting, planted trees and bushes.

“We get great support from attorneys and staff for this project every year,” Thurgood said.

Volunteers at this year’s event included:
Diana Abalos, Kari Anderson,Deb Bowman, Auty Dahlquist, Craig Frame, Vanessa Hansen, Matt Horlacher, Tracey Jackson, Jennifer and Scot Junkin, Andy LeMieux, Aaron Murdock, Nan Olsen, Ashley Price, Kristi Sessions, Vandy So, Sherri Stucki, Barbara Thurgood, Steve Tyler, Julie Uriona, Steve Vuyovich, Barbara Wallin, Matt Wells, and Matt Wirthlin.
