Moving the Needle Initiatives

Mandatory 25-Hour DEI Requirement
  • Holland & Hart’s annual 25-hour DEI requirement for attorneys emphasizes and tracks quality, not only quantity, of time spent by lawyers on DEI initiatives. Understanding that DEI goals can only be achieved if everyone contributes, this 2020 program has resulted in a measurable increase in participation by lawyers and other professionals in our DEI program.
  • Contributions made towards the firm’s inclusive culture and developing others factor into promotions, compensation, advancement, and other attorney recognitions.
Solutions to Measure and Reward Talent (SMART Codes)
  • Our SMART billing program tracks non-billable administrative duties (sometimes called “office housework”), which lawyers often perform without recognition and compensation.
  • SMART Codes are a valuable tool to track time invested by lawyers on business development, training, inclusion and belonging efforts, sponsorship and mentoring, with detailed codes for DEI.
  • Attorneys use separate billing codes for mentoring, supervising, and sponsoring timekeepers.
DEI Strategic Plans
  • Acknowledging that DEI initiatives help to foster an inclusive environment and benefit retention, Holland & Hart’s 2019 firmwide Strategic Plan specifically identifies DEI as a strategic priority.
  • Holland & Hart’s Strategic Plan defines diversity broadly to include individuals of varying backgrounds and experiences.
Racial Justice Pro Bono
  • This initiative awards billable-hour credit for racial justice pro bono matters.
  • A billable-hour pool of 3,000 hours is available to lawyers working on approved matters, with a maximum of 150 hours per attorney per compensation year.
Staffing Teams
  • Every step of the way—from the time the firm first bids for the opportunity to perform work with new clients, throughout a client engagement—Holland & Hart regularly demonstrates to clients that lawyers of various backgrounds and experiences work on their teams.
Attorney Evaluation and Compensation
  • The CDIO, DIVCOM Partner Representative, and Director of Recruitment and Professional Development participate in annual evaluation and compensation meetings for every associate and of counsel, ensuring parity is afforded to all lawyers.
