Holland & Hart LLP is pleased to announce it has expanded its construction and development capabilities with the addition of Jackson-based attorney Michael Currie, who joins as Of Counsel. Mike’s four-plus decades of combined in-house and private practice experience in large project construction and development and related litigation will greatly complement the firm’s ability to serve clients’ project needs.
Mike has served as General Counsel for major construction companies operating in the Midwest, including Kokosing Construction Company, one of the largest general, highway, and industrial contractors in the country, and most recently at Westpatrick Corp., the owner of C.J. Mahan Construction Company and Prestress Services Industries. His experience includes working on a diverse array of heavy civil and industrial projects—from billion-dollar bridge projects like the $11 billion Brent Spence Bridge replacement to the construction of steel mills, water and waste treatment plants, power generation facilities (hydroelectric, steam, solar, and ethanol), highways and other infrastructure, manufacturing operations, and maritime construction. This distinctive background provides him with invaluable insight into the legal and logistical realities project developers and construction companies face as they plan, construct, and complete projects.
“Mike’s clients rely on him to be a steady hand during each step of the construction process. His expertise advising on the complex agreements needed to complete massive industrial projects, coupled with his impressive litigation record, will bring tremendous value to our clients,” said Doug Flowers, Real Estate and Development Practice Group leader. “Clients developing projects across the country will benefit from his extensive in-house experience and pragmatic perspective as they navigate their everyday business challenges and needs. In turn, Holland & Hart will benefit from Mike’s extensive experience and connections in the Midwest as we continue to expand our Construction and Development team’s national reach.”
He represents owners, contractors, subcontractors, architects, engineers, suppliers, and sureties throughout the construction process. Clients rely on his sage guidance to select, structure, and negotiate agreements across project delivery methods—including lump sum, cost-plus, guaranteed maximum price (GMP), line-item GMP, EPC, joint venture, and public-private partnership agreements—to facilitate the best outcome based on the stakeholders involved and the nature of the project.
Mike also brings robust experience litigating and using ADR to resolve disputes that arise during and after construction, including several state supreme court cases that established important legal precedents on bid protests, economic loss, and how to calculate home office overhead.
“Holland & Hart has a stellar reputation in the industry for serving the legal and business needs of clients developing, constructing, and operating large projects across the nation,” said Mike. “I very much look forward to working with Greg Gilbert and the many talented members of the team to both serve the firm’s existing clients and help the firm grow its impressive roster of clients.”
Before working at Westpatrick Corp. and Kokosing Construction Co., Mike was a partner at Thompson Hine LLP, where he led the firm’s construction litigation practice, and served on the firm’s Executive Committee. Mike also founded and served as principal of Currie & Associates LLC.
