The Emergency Treatment and Active Labor Act requires hospitals and on-call physicians to provide medical screening exams and necessary stabilizing treatment regardless of the patient's ability to pay. Violations can result in penalties of up to $50,000 per violation, civil lawsuits, and exclusion from Medicare. This program will address:
- When and to whom EMTALA applies
- Required medical screening exams
- Stabilizing treatment
- Appropriate transfers
- On-call physician responsibilities
- Responding to potential EMTALA violations
