Holland & Hart Nevada Partner Dora Lane appeared on the Federal Justice Center (FJC) Court to Court Inmate Mediation education video to help demonstrate the program. The District of Nevada has developed an inmate early mediation program with the goal to facilitate the early resolution of inmate civil rights cases. In Nevada, the number of inmate cases that continue to litigation has been reduced by approximately 30 percent, saving court time and providing solutions to these cases. Court to Court visited the district court in Reno to learn why the program has been so successful.
Two videos were produced: the first video is the Court to Court program, and the second video is the complete mediation session. In the first video that aired December 2017, Lane serves as the mediator in an Inmate Early Mediation medical case, demonstrating the value-added services the mediation program provides. The second video, posted May 2018, is available online only. This video provides a dramatic reenactment and insights of how mediation between a prison inmate and relevant state officials unfolds. Guided by an experienced mediator, played by Lane, both sides present and discuss their cases, with the goal to achieve a mutually agreed upon resolution.
Dora Lane practices in Holland & Hart’s Reno office and assists businesses of all sizes throughout the Mountain West, by guiding them through the myriad of labor and employment issues to keep their operations running smoothly. Lane works closely with her clients, talking through day-to-day employment issues, to ensure that best practices are in place and legitimate business reasons motivate employment decisions. She counsels and trains employers to hire, manage, and, when necessary, terminate employees in compliance with federal and state employment laws. With the exposure and liability that can result from non-compliant or simply ineffective processes, Lane works with her clients to audit employment record keeping processes to identify and fix problems before an outside agency or lawsuit intervenes.
