DENVER (May 7 ,2008) – Attorneys with the Denver law firm of Holland & Hart LLP, in partnership with M. Lee Smith Publishers, a national provider of information resources for Human Resources professionals, will conduct Employment Records Retention, Retrieval & Destruction, a one-day workshop on document management best practices. The event, designed for Colorado employers, HR executives, and corporate legal counsel, will be conducted Friday, June 13 at the Cherry Creek Hotel.
“When it comes to employee records and personnel files, most employers don’t know exactly what to save and what to shred,” says Tobie Hazard, Holland & Hart partner and leader of the workshop faculty. “And no wonder, with all the ways paperwork can come back to haunt them. We’re going to walk folks through recordkeeping essentials, so they know what, and as importantly why, they should or shouldn’t keep certain documents.”
The stakes for recordkeeping errors have never been higher. Increasingly, juries in employment litigation weigh an employer’s paper trail, both hard-copy and electronic, when deciding on an employee’s claim of discrimination, harassment, retaliation or other workplace conflict. And because they are generally employees themselves, they look for any reason to side with the worker. That’s why employers must be prepared to produce documents and records that defend their decisions and policies.
Those who choose to participate in this event will learn:
- which documents should be kept and which are vital, how to keep a record of a workplace investigation,
- who "owns" an employee's personnel records
- special document challenges
- how to store electronic data
- time requirements in recordkeeping
- proper methods of disposal
Joining Hazard on the faculty are fellow Holland & Hart attorneys Tanya E. Milligan, Alyssa K. Yatsko, Vivian M. Barrios and Christie R. McCall. They each focus their law practices on employment law, have years of experience advising Colorado employers on documentation and other matters, and will make Employment Records Retention, Retrieval & Destruction completely interactive, with plenty of back and forth with workshop attendees.
