In addition to our lawyers offering their professional services on a pro bono basis, firm members also do "non-legal" charitable and civic work in our communities. From conducting clothing, food, and toy drives for foster children, battered women, and Haitian orphans to visiting and delivering meals to the home-bound to painting and repairing the homes of low income elderly citizens, we offer our help to those in need. In 1997, we celebrated the firm's 50th anniversary by working with Habitat for Humanity on local projects in 10 of our fifteen locations, including sponsoring and building a home for a family in Denver.
In late 1998, Jean and Sam Guyton, a retired Holland & Hart partner, initiated the establishment of the Holland & Hart Foundation. A 501(c)(3) organization, the Foundation carries on the law firm's tradition of community service and takes it one step further.
"By bringing volunteer projects in its 15 offices under one umbrella, the Foundation shows the whole firm family what others in the firm are doing. The hope is that individual attorneys, staff and their families, and other law firms and business organizations, will be motivated to do similar kinds of community service." - Sam Guyton
The Foundation, with its primary objective of providing volunteers for community service projects, is to our knowledge the only one of its kind established by a major law firm in the United States. Other firms have established grant-making foundations, but no others focus principally on volunteerism and building community.
The Holland & Hart Foundation promotes the human side of community service by creating ways for the firm's extended "family" to help others in need. This "family" includes about 800 current attorneys and staff and another 2,000 or so retirees, alumni and family members in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho, Washington D.C. and Utah.
Overseen by a six-member board of directors, which includes practicing and retired attorneys, staff and family members, committees in each of the firm's 15 offices work to identify the needs in their geographic communities and how best we can help others outside the firm. The added bonus for us is that, in coming together for the common purpose of providing service to those outside the firm, we help ourselves and our families feel more a part of the community within the firm.
