Coal in the West Conference

Patrick R. Day, James K. Tarpey, and Mark D. Safty will speak at Law Seminars International’s two-day conference on the future of Coal in the West, March 29 & 30, at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, Colorado. This program addresses new regulatory, legal, and business challenges and policy priorities in the coal industry.

Patrick R. Day of Holland & Hart's Cheyenne office will serve as program co-chair and will speak on the “Initial Planning Process for Siting Coal Facilities”. Mr. Day will walk through the factors to consider in selecting the best place to site a coal-fired generating plant, including the relative economics and practicalities of moving coal energy by wire versus by rail.

James K. Tarpey of Holland & Hart's DTC office will speak on a panel regarding “The Challenge of Creating Sufficient Transmission Structure”, including discussion of state transmission siting processes, EPA provisions and processes for federal preemption, and how they affect the states.

Mark D. Safty of Holland & Hart's Denver office will speak on the “Global Warming Concerns and the Relationship Between Coal and Renewables” and will discuss finding the optimum approach to, and mix of, generation—coal/gas/wind/nuclear—impact of renewable portfolio standards on the market for coal.
