Joseph Morrey

1800 Broadway, Suite 300, Boulder, CO 80302

Joe leverages his engineering background and legal knowledge to draft and prosecute patents in the electronics, computer, mechanical, and medical areas.

Joe works on a large team counseling some of the world’s leading technology companies with their sophisticated patent portfolios. He prepares U.S. and foreign patent applications, and office action responses, leads examiner interviews, and conducts patentability opinions. He works with companies developing sophisticated products including medical, mechanical, and electronic devices, building deep relationships with our clients. He uses his background as an engineer to immerse himself in their products, business goals, industry, and competitive landscape.

Before joining Holland & Hart, Joe worked for an international law firm in Texas. Additionally, Joe worked as a mechanical engineer at an aerospace and defense company prior to becoming an attorney. In this role, he participated in material selection, design analyses, FEA processes, statistical analyses, prototyping, and production testing to validate new designs of products and manufacturing equipment for full-scale production. He was also an officer in the United States Air Force where he served as an engineer and led airmen on humanitarian and disaster relief missions worldwide. During law school, Joe clerked for the United States Air Force JAG Corps and worked as a graduate research assistant for the technology transfer and licensing office at the University of Missouri, where he conducted prior art searches and prepared patentability reports for new technologies developed at the university.
